Course: Oil Painting from Start to Finish

Join us for this 3-week course with artist Tom Robertson, and be guided through the process of painting in oils from start to finish.

The course will start with the fundamental basics of mixing an authentic glue gesso primer, before building up a painted image in layers. Each week Tom will guide participants through a series of exercises, with time for independent working, resulting in a finished painting.

Course Structure

Week 1, 3rd September, 6-8pm: Learn about glue gesso, its differences from modern surfaces and using a period formula you’ll prepare your very own glue gesso from scratch, applying it to a wooden panel. (Note this process uses Rabbit Skin Glue, an animal by-product).

Week 2, 10th September, 6-8pm: Build up an underpainting over the panel prepared in Week 1, using an image of your choice.

Week 4, 17th September, 6-8pm: You’ll finalise your painting from Week 2, building on the structure provided by the underpainting.

All materials and equipment for this course are provided. Participants are encouraged to bring a colour photograph to work from in weeks 2-3.
