This workshop is a basic introduction on how to create moving image/animation in Adobe
AfterEffects. AE is an industry-standard tool for video compositing that allows many elements such as animation, real life footage, GFX, motion graphics, 3D models and all sorts of video/images to be composited together.

We’ll cover:

  • the basics of the AE user interface
  • creating compositions
  • manipulating footage: keyframes, text, colour, transitions, masking, effects etc.
  • nesting/pre-composing, parenting
  • combining 2D and 3D elements! anything is possible!
  • rendering with AE and Media Encoder

Before the workshop, have a think about what kind of video work you might want to make (ie wanting to do 3D bits, wanting to make your paintings move, etc). I’ll deliver the basics of the software, with frequent stops along the way so that you have time to try things out and experiment yourself. If you have any bits of video or images (your art or downloaded from the internet) that you’d like to use in this initial experimental composition for learning purposes, please bring them along on a USB or via your preferred file transfer methods. Contents and focus will be adjusted slightly based on what the participants want to develop.

Prior knowledge of Photoshop is useful, but not necessary. We’ll be using Adobe AfterEffects and Adobe Media Encoder. The aim of the workshop is to make you understand AE better and gain confidence in using it for your future projects, as well as have a good grasp of how animation/moving image can be utilised in conjunction with your practice.

People with knowledge of AE can also come along, and utilise the workshop to develop ongoing work or start a new project.

This project is made possible by public funding from The National Lottery through Arts Council England.
